Checking of gas sampling tube by direct measurement of exhaled breath.

چکیده
EDITOR: We read with interest the article published by Gauthama and Morris [1] in which the authors reported the findings of a survey of UK anaesthetists for checking the capnograph before anaesthesia. The authors reported that majority of UK anaesthetists use exhaled breath to check the capnograph but the practice is not universal due to concerns of sterility. We wish to report a critical incident related to a gas sampling tube that supports the use of exhaled breath during checking of an anaesthetic machine and a breathing circuit. A partial break in the gas sampling tube was not detected on visual inspection and machine check was performed following published guidelines [2]. We believe, had we performed a direct measurement of exhaled breath, the break in the gas sampling tube would have been detected.

concentration of 21%. In this incident the sampling tube damage in the operating theatre was not detected by visual inspection. We believe that atmospheric oxygen reached the anaesthetic gas analyser unit through the break in the gas sampling tube. The gold standard check that a breathing circuit is not blocked is by the use of capnography to demonstrate that expired air can pass retrogradely i...
متن کاملStandardization of the collection of exhaled breath condensate and exhaled breath aerosol using a feedback regulated sampling device.
Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and associated exhaled breath aerosols (EBA) are valuable non-invasive biological media used for the quantification of biomarkers. EBC contains exhaled water vapor, soluble gas-phase (polar) organic compounds, ionic species, plus other species including semi- and non-volatile organic compounds, proteins, cell fragments, DNA, dissolved inorganic compounds, ions, a...
متن کاملDETECTION AND MEASUREMENT OF ACETONE IN THE BREATH OF DIABETICS BY ION MOBILITY SPECTROMETRY METHOD
Background: The ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is an analytical technique that is widely used due to its high sensitivity and speed for the detection of ionized molecules in gas phase and under atmospheric pressure. Breath analysis is a new method for obtaining information about person's clinical conditions that is considered by researchers. Human exhaled air contains a variety of components s...

Background and Objective: The collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a noninvasive, safe and simple technique to obtain direct samples from lung and use for estimation of the effects of air pollution on human subjects. EBC contains several compounds including simple ions, hydrogen peroxide, proteins, cytokines, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), creatine, Electrolytes, trace elements and to...
متن کاملExhaled human breath measurement method for assessing exposure to halogenated volatile organic compounds.
The organic constituents of exhaled human breath are representative of blood-borne concentrations through gas exchange in the blood/breath interface in the lungs. The presence of specific compounds can be an indicator of recent exposure or represent a biological response of the subject. For volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sampling and analysis of breath is preferred to direct measurement fro...
